Should David Bentley be given a chance?

Aaron Lennon was signed for a measly £1m from a highly regarded Leeds youth team and has since cemented himself into an ever-changing Tottenham side. David Bentley was snapped up for 15 times the price of Lennon and, to put it straight, has endured a torrid time with us. I'm sure Blackburn went laughing all the way to the bank.

Lennon's final ball has always come under scrutiny and you could say it has always been the wall preventing him from regular England starts. That wall just continues to get stronger for every poor cross that is executed.

Que David Bentley. Now this boy can cross, and, with our new 6ft something striker it makes sense for Dave to play a role in next years' team. Would it make sense to play Lennon left midfield and Bentley right?
Pace on one flank and decent deliveries from the other. Would this help our progression or hinder it?

Should Bentley be given a role in the team next year?

Regards.

  1. Lennon player of the year last year.

yeah definately time for him to step down, now we have a tall player so it's easier for him to cross, and his crosses have definately been improving and still will as he is young.

    Yeah should step down....

    Stupid article

  2. no, bentley is dog poo

  3. Take the article down you muppet.

  4. lennon is a youngster still learning his trade and getting better every year right in front of our eyes. We should embrace his potential and continue to let him grow in a spurs shirt. He is improving with his final ball and has been a goal threat since he arrived. Bentley needs to give Harry a selection headache by proving his worth this season, when and if he gets the chance.. Lennon on the right, Bentley take your chance if it comes otherwise be prepared to be sold!!

  5. I simply state moving Lennon to left midfield. Not take him out the team

    ReplyDelete
  6. and ruin his potential to be one of the best right wingers in the game!! Agree with the rest this is poor article with little thought

    ReplyDelete
  7. is this guy serious, there is a reason why Lennon starts and Bentley doesnt - work it out you tit!!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. bently is about as clever as you if you think he should replace aaron lennon. yes bentley can pass, but what about the rest of his game and the amount of time spent doin his hair????

    ReplyDelete
  9. Complete Idiot.

Did Bentley make one decent cross last season?... Is Crouch renowned for his heading?

    I can't believe what I read sometimes...

    ReplyDelete
  10. Bentley should be given a role, some1's gotta put the kettle on before half time warm up the showers before the lads come off at full time. He could even do a spot of hoovering in the directors lounge.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Did I suggest anything. I believe I am asking the question wether giving our £15m a game on the right hand side on midfield would be beneficial

    ReplyDelete
  12. That is blasphemy talk!!!i

You have dug a hole now, you can talk about defoe being sacrificed, crouch even though he just arrived, jenas or most certainly Redknapp. But never bring up the taboo subject of lennon being sacrified...he is the darling of the lane as king is the king.

    End of....you have been warned.

  14. Someone called you a muppet in regard to this article, however this is a bit harsh on muppets.Having given this article a lengthy thirty seconds of thought,i have decided you are a bellend and this article is total crud

  15. A resounding NO. I think Bentley should play a part this season, but within a team. Lennon's final ball has improved and if last season is a gauge, then it will continue to improve.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lennon should definitely be out on the left, he has very little end product in the form of crossing and most of his good work came from direct running or one twos and cutting in... all of which he can do with much greater effect on the left... allowing Bentley to get a run at his favoured RW spot and find his assist crazy form of the seasons before.

  17. wtf whoever wrote this arct is a twat and who ever agrees with him is aswell cus lennon is prob 1 off the best players we av i admit bently has a better end ball but in the past few games i have watched lennon has been top quality and his finish ball is good aswell as its got alot better but the other thing is yea he signed 4 1m but wat he worth now i would say 18 to 22 times that he is prob the only player at spurs that every fan likes and if u say this then i hope ur not a spurs fan cus u dont deserve 2 be if u say lennon dont deserve 2 be in our team cus hes playing the best football i av ever seen him play ur a fucking mug 4 wrighting this fuck off to japan u peice of shit u might aswell be an arshole fan nob

  18. Lennon step down? What a stupid notion! Leave the writing to those who know what they're talking about mate.

  19. Well you got a reaction at least you cretin

  20. What and move Luka ino the middle?
Too lightweight for me having those 3 together, but that's not to say it's not an 'in-game option' to use. Not first choice for my first reason, aswell as the fact that you'd just be handicapping Lennon when he's really starting to look the part.
Bentley is a bennchwarmer for me to be used as option, or to be sold.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lennons crossing got much better last season and i'm sure he will again improve this season.
Bentley can't beat a player like Lennon, although I would not move Lennon to the left often, it can only be good for his game ultimately.
I woul like to see Bentley stay though.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Did I ever state to leave Lennon out the side? I merely asked wether it would be worth playing him on the left seeings as how he only managed to cross the ball for 2 or 3 games of last season

    ReplyDelete
  23. What a prat! If we don't cash in on Bentley, he's back up only to Azza.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What a knob you really really are!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. tbh yea this arct is a load of ball but we could let lennon play on the left where he could attack and push into the middle behind the strikers with modric so then bently can be given a c hance to improve and show hes worth 15m and give us his great cross but also is every1 forgetting geovani who is on great form and also likes 2 attack so he can play on the left with lennon on the right and shit bently off 4 12m 2 man c or some1

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why don't we put a skip in the oppo's 18yd box and Bently might have half a chance!
Lennon's final ball was much improved last season since he allegedly had some one to one with 'Arry and co.
    This will hopefully continue.
    Moronic thread.

  27. so nice to see spurs fans have a go at spurs fans..it was a question...arron leenon is a good player that about as far as it goes...yes he has pace but he cant cross fact....why knock the bloke for his post....knock the scum dont knock people from your own family...idiots...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Not sure about the solution BUT agree Lennon must improve the end product. Those of us that are (very) old will remember John Chiedozie (now selling bouncy castles apparently) - VERY VERY quick but hit the paxton roof more often than a forwards head.

  30. yes i agree with guy, give bentley a go in the posistion he was brought to play..
he is bound to get a game or two to try to prove if he can do it.. but not at the expence of lennon on the right. only if he is out injured..
    COYS

    ReplyDelete
  31. "Pace on one flank and good deliveries from the other." It's never going to be a quote from Alex Ferguson, is it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. We need Lennon and someone of the same type on the other side (A Young). Yes he struggles with crosses but when he is running at players they have no idea what to do about him. As long as our other players position themselves better for him we will only cause havock for any defence. I say bring on some of the youngsters as they showed a lot of effort when they came on in the friendlies.

    ReplyDelete
  33. When are we going to get out new stadium? A few pretty pictures and everyone has stopped talking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. how about lennon on the RIGHT and bale on the left for the delivery factor

    ReplyDelete
  35. that is without doubt the most stupid post of the year what a c**t you are. If you ever needed to know why we dont achieve more success carry on reading here - pathetic

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes, BALE's a good idea. He's not injured, by any chance?

    ReplyDelete
  37. people are entitled to post an opinion. youre all a bunch of pricks

    ReplyDelete
  38. i've always thought lennon on the left and bentley on the right would be a good combo. when we bought lennon he could play either flank. poster, i think your headline has bought kneejerk reactions where your actual opinion deserves contemplation.

    ReplyDelete
  39. lennon is one of the best wingers in the EPL for speed, probably the fastest, his mere presence upsets defenders......why do writers write such rubbish which is nonsense??

    ReplyDelete
  40. Do you watch Spurs? Our attack is so much more effective when Lennon has the ball at his feet. The only thing Bentley has shown is that he is slow and can't beat anyone with the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  41. you can all suck my bum.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What an extremely poor article, complete rubbish!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree. Lennon on the left and give Bentley one last chance to prove himself on the right. Either that or vice versa..but Bentley has the potential to make dirty wicked service from the right.

    Conclusion:
Lennon left and Bentley (one last try) on the right.

    ReplyDelete
  44. lennon and mordic stuck up a great balance to ur side at end of the season remember chelsea.anyone who thinks of changing that for david 2pence should have some laser done.

  45. Your an absolute moron writer!! you actually joking or being serious dont give up your day job!!!! jesus step down!!!!!!!!

  47. lennons neva had a real target to hit, only when berba was here and his game (lennon) was not at the improved level at which he has progressed to now, so it wil be interesting to see how lennon does this term, as like him or not crouch will bring a new dynamic to our forward play,
and also i expect bentlys game to step up a few levels fom his 1st season at spurs,
our side is pretty small, and we lack the height and reach other teams have, the 2 french lads mentioned in press sisoko and another lad , wud go a long way to giving us that energy we lack, lets get behind the boys,
oh yeah celtic won wembly cup and lost their champ league qualifier?????

    ReplyDelete
  48. load of fuckin bollox can you fuk off please and write somethingthat makes sense!

    ReplyDelete
  49. ok spurs fans are so naive lennon yea he's a good player for a team like tottenham but come on, he's been showing potential for all these years but he's not getting any better jus like wayne rooney (who dont get me wrong is a good player he jus never improves)and crouch will hardly play because you have 2 maybe 3 better strikers already jeez spurs fans cant see talent

    ReplyDelete
  50. are u on drugs? Lennon have never been better then now!!=

    ReplyDelete
  51. god ...even my mrs (who knows fu*k all about football) said thats a loud of shit!

    ReplyDelete
  52. is this writer for real

    is he an arsehole fan

what a stupid thing to say

clive wilson could cross now and again shall we get him in now we have crouch

shall we buy back s.kelly or ghaly cos they have crossed a ball before

what a load of shabba this is

bentley should not be given a chance he has fight for a right to play

    ReplyDelete
  53. how is this a load of bollox. some of the haters here dont understand he's not saying drop Lennon hes merely saying both of them in the same team. anyone with half a brain can see bently's a better crosser of the ball and Lennon had previously shown potential on the left so you haters come up with something more constructive instead of calling a fellow fan of yours a twat and a bellend etc.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I believe Crouch scored the highest number of headed goals in the premier league with 7 I believe.

David Bentley from the 06/07 season till now has 29 assists and 17 goals.

While Lennon has had 15 Assists and 10 goals in the same period.

Lennon's great talent is not his delivery but his quick direct running at defenders and cutting in and getting balls across the box. I have no doubt that he could accomplish this on the left side.

This will allow Bentley the chance of showing some of his Blackburn form on the right wing.

Bentley didn't become a shit player over night, it's just that we didn't have the players to play to his strengths, on a good day Bentley is worth more to the team than Lennon.

He is more of a Goal threat, gives us a decent set piece choice for corners and freekicks and most importantly deliver's a better cross than Lennon.

    Think about it ;)

    ReplyDelete
  55. To answer a earlier quesion yes Bale is injured but im not sure if others have noticed but BAE played in the number 3 shirt against West Spam so im thinking that may signel the end for Bale shame because I think with a run in the team he could do a real job for us... and as for this article I dont agree with the sentiment but guys chill out with your comments he is a fellow yid after all

    ReplyDelete
  56. sumal get a life you blatent virgin

    ReplyDelete
  57. well, im sitting on the fence, but i think people are missing the point of the article.
who is 2nd choice to lennon? who would we see play if lennon was injured? id push jenas out there, ahead of bentley, and play wilson and tommy centre mid.
i dont see the harm in having the wingers alternate through out the match, how duff and robben used too, i honestly think, lennon would score far more goals if he played on the left, but i wouldnt want him there all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Are you Tony Cascarino in disguise writer? if not then with this kinda crap based on OLD performances you might have found your long lost twin.

    ReplyDelete
  59. InsideN17

switching Lennon would make us no more dangerous in attack. Bentley on the right would be no more effective than Modric (or Dos Santos) on the left

so, he should stay where he is - terrorising every premiership leftback (often a weakspot)

the possible interchange between Modric, Lennon, Keane during matchplay will be something to admire

with Rose and Dos Santos also waiting for a chance to impress

our only concern is finding a partner for Wilson

    ReplyDelete
  60. and p.s sumal is completely right. you mongs.
if we sold bentley and he started playing well again, im sure you'd moan that he wasnt given a chance. cant win !

    ReplyDelete
  61. Everyone point at InsideN17 and shout kn#b head (is that better?).

Bentley just couldn't make the step up to a bigger club. He was fine in a little pond but struggles when he has much better players to compete with.

    ReplyDelete
  62. blimey talk about start a water fight...bentley deserves a chance but not at the expense of lennon. You dont become a bad player over night. All these you haven't got a clue need to lighten up,squad game keep him give him a friggin chance
    nuff said coys yidinbeds

    ReplyDelete
  63. im not saying playing lennon on the left would make us more dangerous, im saying alternating left and right more often during a match would make us more dangerous.
i think he would score more goals on the left though, and give us a different tactical option.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Lennon should definitely not be moved onto the left wing. He was there a few times last season and even though he didn't fail at that position, in no way did he flourish.
Should Bentley go? No, is the simple answer.
If Lennon gets injured, or fatigued, who have we got to cover? Some have mentioned Jenas, but I would much prefer to have a player that knows how to run past a player and whip in a good ball under pressure. Bentley showed he can do this at Blackburn, and in pre season last year. So we know he can still do it.
I believe if we stick with Bentley, and if Redknapp gives him a bit of confidence, he'll soon turn out good performances when he's called upon.
If he does go, we cannot rely on the squad we have at the moment to cover for the right wing. And I can't see any player signing for Tottenham knowing he'll be a cover player for Lennon.
    Keep him, keep faith.

    ReplyDelete
  65. who plays right side then if lennon is out injured ? and why?

    ReplyDelete
  66. what you have to consider is that our strikers are right footed - so Lennon getting in behind the opposing leftbacks is more favorable

Bostock and Rose are natural lefties. we dont need to shift him

Bentley arriving at spurs gave Lennon a kick up the backside he needed. so it wasnt a total waste. combined cost of the 2 is somewhere between 10-15m

but its time for him to find another team

    ReplyDelete
  67. David Bently deserves nothing, he came in for a club record fee, and what has he achieved nothing, if he spent more time worrying about his game than his hair, he would be ok. Cash in on him asap Arry. Stupid Posting

    ReplyDelete
  68. hang about, were you going to play modric?

stupid question, right wingers compete for postion, its like asking a striker to adjust to being a defender!

    it dont work

    ReplyDelete
  69. You need 2 right wingers anyway, and I'm more than happy with these two. Lennon of course should start but Bentley deserves another chance - I feel he might surprise us this season.

InsideN17 is not stupid and deserves praise for starting a valid debate.

    ReplyDelete
  70. InsideN17 & Sumal... Don't worry about the rest of them, your only asking the question, which I think is a very valid one!! Give the boy bentley a go...he was great at Blackburn... and during certain games it will be good to bring lennon on in the 2nd half when the other teams are not used to his speed. COYS

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm not suggesting Bentley isnt good enough
but trying to fit him, Lennon and Modric in the same side will not work

and it would stifle the progress of Rose and Bostock who will become BETTER players than Lennon

Bentley wasn't needed, neither was Bent
    hopefully both will leave soon

    ReplyDelete
  72. So funny reading these responses. Morons. Keep lennon on the right and bently left. To be honest anyone left to keep Modric in the centre where he is best. To be fair I actually think lennon may be better suited to the left. He cant cross for sh*t so playing on the left means he can cut in and lay off a pass.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Bentley isn't in China but having a look at villa's training setup as we write!! Nuff said!!!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think Gomes should play centre forward.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Take it easy, fellas, the author is only fulfilling her duty as a mother.

    ReplyDelete
  76. If we are keeping him yes- but seems Kyle may be given chance on left midfield if we keep Hutton. Its up to Bentley to make head way he has talent needs to have application. Seems to flash; and our team balance means we can't have any more lightweight players.

    ReplyDelete
  77. whats ur bloody problem all of youu!?
    its a posistion?
if he goes left or right does it really matter? surely if hes a anmazing player then he can play what ever position,
soo keep ur negative comment to ur self next timee!
id liked too see you lot write a better article?

    ReplyDelete
  78. i have mixed feelings about bentley and all this should he stay should he go. people r making un fair coments wiv out lookin at the facts, fact 1: last season there was not much 2 aim for up front 4 his crosses 2 pay off. fact 2: bentley is englands best crosser after beckham. i think 1 more season wiv crouch up front and bentley could shine, redknapp has admitted several times there was no 1 to hold the ball up upfront and no reckonised header of the ball. crouch does both and bentley supplys both. bentley rm lennon lm palacios and modric cm. i think bentley should be given 1 more season

    ReplyDelete
  79. If people think that someone else's difference of opinion on A GAME OF FOOTBALL deserves a string of abuse, they need to get a grip. Fair enough if you don't agree but save your vitriol for something in life that is worthy of it.

By the way we tried this formation once last year, against Stoke, and won 3-1, Lennon scored, Modric MOTM and created about 20 chances. Oh yeah, and it was our best performance of the season, so it's definitely an idea worthy of at least discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  80. oh yeah and a third fact. bentley was god after his 40 yarder against the scum.

    ReplyDelete
  81. haa get a grip, umm im alright thanks matee, soo if he is that amaing player why cant he play were ever people sujest?

    ReplyDelete
  82. I've just come back from the pub and read this and the comments from you lads... simply put, and i'm not going to be rude... erm, no. For a number of reasons that we saw last season, Lennon is one of our untouchables, he has made the right side his own. Him, Woody, King (when fit) BAE (who is getting better and better, and looks awesome), Wilson and Defoe all day. We need to look at other areas, and NOT moving him from the right.

    ReplyDelete
  83. oh, and Modric doesn't seem to be doing to bad a job on the Left... COYS!

    ReplyDelete
  84. David Beckham can't cross for toffee (check his ratio) and it didn't stop him getting an England place

    ReplyDelete
  85. Good to see we have so many moron fans, not much wonder Gomez was getting booed at home last season.

I agree with the writer in the sense that Bentley should be given another year unless we can sacrifice him to get someone better.

Lennon would still be my first choice on recent form but how many games has Bentley played on the right and how many of them did we have a target man playing up front? Might be useful to have a few option like!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. What a total CUNT!! This idiot knows nothing about football! Our midfield was one of the best units in the prem in the last half of last season, why should the mighty Yids change that around???? It would be madness, ship out Bently even if they get a million for him, show pony, spends too much time in front of the mirror. If not he can tie Lennons boot laces before the game.

    ReplyDelete
  87. last commenter. tell me how stating his idea makes him a cunt then come back and comment. that applies to alot of the haters on here aswell.

    ReplyDelete
  88. inside 17
    ignore these twats
bentley should be given ONE more chance on the right
if he does better than last time(the free kick which hit Dunnes foot) he should stay

    ReplyDelete
  89. just ask evra what lennons all about he has nightmares about him, most managers would lennon on their right flank, bentley would not lase his boots the peice of crap.harry do us afavour and cash in on that flop bentley

    ReplyDelete
  90. Why is everyone slating the poor guy, it was only a question which warrants a yes or no, not all the insults.

    ReplyDelete
  91. dude i too feel bentley is class, look at the goals he s scored...he belongs there in first team...as far as lennon in concerned, he can play left and he must work on his passing..his kik s are too fast for header or finishing touch...

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think if anything Bentley should be tried out in the central to try out his passing ability, since we don't have one great passer since Carrick. Lennon should stay on the right, while Bale starts on the left wing. Keane can go left too if Harry wants him in the squard. But from the quality we have now, I don't think Bentley will start. He can only come on as a sub for Modric or Lennon.

    ReplyDelete
  93. i can do poopy in my potty

    ReplyDelete
  94. Inside N17 - I think its an interesting question and worthy of discussion. I would be interested to understand what Harry has / hasnt seen in Bentley to make him mothball a £15million player so readily. I seem to recall Darren Anderton didnt have an immediate impact on the pitch either so you do wonder whether there is something other than ability keeping him out of all consideration.

To 98% of respondents - wat da fuk is u finkin? I rekon da reason dat u cant articula.........articliate yurselvez wivout soundin like kidz is dat u're brain power is used on ur futball genius. Cunz.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Bentley has to be given a chance especially as we now have Crouch in the middle. Anyway, unfortunately you'll never get a full season of consistency from Lennon.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Bentley should without a doubt be given more of a chance now that he has someone to cross to!

How many seasons have we been saying Lennon's final ball will get better and it rarely does?! The only reason Lennon gets everyone raving about him is because he has pace! Nothing more! If he was THAT good he'd be in the England set up more often than not!

Look at how many assists Bentley had when he was at Blackburn and yet he comes to Spurs and all of a sudden becomes a bad player? No one was saying get rid of him at the Roma game last pre-season?

Some of our supporters are so fickle and stupid so i for one hope Bentley leaves and shows us just what we're missing cuz Lennon's crossing will NEVER be a patch on his

    ReplyDelete
  97. lennon can play on the left side. he has many times before and always shown pace regardless. i thought about bentley on the right wing before and i like the fact that he has peter crouch as a target. people say crouch can't head, maybe the balls crossed to him weren't always the best... just saying maybe! maybe i'm completely wrong. but if we can't make most of the money back for bentley and he stays, he can surprise us. here are two points though:
    1) what would you do with modric? he's too small to play next to palacios without tougher players on the wings to help out... he is feisty though
    2) what about gio on the right wing? this way both wingers can cut in and shoot at goal with their striking foot. they definitely have the pace for it.

just some thoughts... doesn't mean i necessarily agree with them

    ReplyDelete
  98. Put lennon on the left??? Madness. Whoever wrote this article needs his head examined. Give Bentley a chance? Ok maybe in a Carling cup game or for 15-20min if Lennon needs a rest but otherwise the boy has shown no pace and no quality and lennon is not as effective on the left.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Absolutely YES. Play him in the right position and the boy will come good.

    ReplyDelete
  100. the post at 20.16, you fucking idiot.
Your saying bentley dident do one good cross??
Shows you go to the games dont it.
And i can remember crouch scoring loads of goals with his head.
